FAQ
How many species live in the ocean?
An estimated 700,000 to 1 million species, with 2/3 still undescribed. New species are discovered at a rate of about 2,000 per year. The ocean covers 71% of the Earths surface but we have explored less than 5% of it.
What is the largest ocean animal?
The blue whale, reaching 30 meters and 180 tonnes. It is the largest animal ever to have existed, larger than any known dinosaur. Its tongue weighs as much as an elephant.
What percentage of the ocean is unexplored?
Over 80% of the ocean remains unmapped, unobserved, and unexplored. We have better maps of Mars than of our own ocean floor. The deepest point (Challenger Deep) has been visited by fewer people than have been to the Moon.
How can I help protect ocean life?
Reduce plastic use, support sustainable seafood (MSC certified), reduce carbon footprint, avoid products containing shark squalene or unsustainably harvested sea cucumber, support marine protected areas, and participate in beach cleanups.
