About the Clownfish

All clownfish are born male and can change to female - but not back. The dominant fish in a group is always female. When she dies, the largest male changes sex to replace her. They live among sea anemone tentacles that would sting any other fish. A special mucus coating protects them from the stings. Finding Nemo caused a 40% increase in clownfish demand for home aquariums, devastating wild populations. There are 30 recognized species. They perform a dance with their host anemone to acclimate to its sting. They feed the anemone in return for protection - a true mutualistic relationship.
