About the Urchin (Sea)

They have been around for 450 million years. Their sharp spines protect them from most predators. Sea otters, triggerfish, and starfish are their main predators. When predators are removed, urchin populations explode, creating urchin barrens - underwater deserts devoid of kelp. Their roe (uni) is a prized sushi ingredient worth $200+ per kg. Over 950 species exist. They have a unique chewing apparatus called Aristotles lantern, one of the most complex feeding structures in nature. Some species are venomous. They can live 100+ years.
