About the Starfish (Sunflower)
The largest starfish in the world with up to 24 arms. They are the fastest starfish, moving at 1 meter per minute using 15,000 tube feet. Since 2013, sea star wasting disease has killed over 5 billion sunflower stars along the Pacific coast. Their population crashed by 90%. They are now critically endangered. They are keystone predators that control sea urchin populations. Without them, urchin barrens have expanded dramatically. They can regrow lost arms. They are the only starfish species listed under the US Endangered Species Act.
