Blobfish
About the Blobfish
Voted the worlds ugliest animal in 2013 and made the mascot of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society. It looks like a blob only because it is photographed at surface pressure - at its natural depth, it looks like a normal fish. It lives at pressures 60-120x atmospheric. It has no swim bladder - its gelatinous body is slightly less dense than water, allowing it to float above the seafloor without swimming. It has very little muscle. It was unknown until 2003 when it was discovered by a research vessel. It is threatened by deep-sea trawling. It is actually a good parent, guarding its eggs on the ocean floor.
