Damselfish (Clark)
About the Damselfish (Clark)
The most widespread anemonefish, found from the Andaman Sea to Fiji. Like clownfish, they live in mutualistic symbiosis with sea anemones. They are hardy and popular aquarium fish. Over 30 species of anemonefish exist. All are protandrous hermaphrodites, starting as male and changing to female. They defend their host anemone aggressively despite their small size. They feed their anemone by dropping food on its tentacles. They are immune to anemone stings due to a protective mucus coating acquired during acclimation.
