Lionfish (Clearfin)
About the Lionfish (Clearfin)
Another lionfish species less known than the invasive red lionfish but equally venomous. Over 12 species of lionfish exist in the Indo-Pacific. All have venomous dorsal, anal, and pelvic spines. They are ambush predators that corner prey with their large pectoral fins. They are nocturnal. Their elaborate fin display makes them popular aquarium fish. They are native throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific. Their venom causes intense pain, swelling, and sometimes nausea. Heat application destroys the venom proteins.
