About the Coral (Fire)

Not true coral but a hydrozoan related to jellyfish and the Portuguese man o war. They have tiny nematocysts that deliver a painful sting to divers who brush against them. The sting causes burning sensation (hence the name) that can last days. They are important reef builders. They have two forms: blade-like and branching. They encrust on other corals and dead reef framework. They are found in all tropical seas. Over 50 species exist. They are among the first colonizers of damaged reefs. Their sting is not dangerous but very uncomfortable. Divers learn to recognize and avoid them.
