About the Frilled Shark

Another living fossil, unchanged for 80 million years. It has 300 trident-shaped teeth arranged in 25 rows, designed to grasp soft-bodied squid. Its jaws can open extremely wide, allowing it to swallow prey whole that is larger than itself. It is eel-like in appearance, unlike any other shark. It lives at 500-1,500 meters depth. It has a gestation period of 3.5 years - one of the longest of any vertebrate. It is rarely seen alive. It was first described in 1884. Its body is extremely flexible. It captures prey with a lunging strike like a snake.
