About the Garden Eel

They live in colonies of thousands, each in its own burrow, swaying in the current like a garden of plants. When threatened, they retreat instantly into their burrows. Colonies can cover areas the size of football fields. They never leave their burrows as adults. They catch food by facing into the current with mouths open. Over 30 species exist. They are found in tropical seas worldwide. They are shy and difficult to approach. Their burrows can be over 60 cm deep. Males will fight neighboring males for territory by bumping and biting.
