Among the fastest terrestrial invertebrates, running at 100 body lengths per second. They are semiterrestrial, living in burrows on beaches. They can rotate their eye stalks 360 degrees. They are pale colored, blending with sand. They are mostly nocturnal. They create elaborate burrow systems up to 1.5 meters deep. Over 20 species exist. They are found on tropical and temperate beaches worldwide. They are important beach ecosystem scavengers. They can survive in water but prefer land. Their scientific name means swift-footed.
