About the Oarfish (Giant)

The longest bony fish in the world, possibly reaching 11 meters. They are likely the source of sea serpent legends. They swim by undulating their dorsal fin while keeping their body straight. They are rarely seen alive - most sightings are of dead or dying individuals floating at the surface. In Japan, their appearance is considered an omen of earthquakes. They have no scales. Their dorsal fin rays can extend into long streamers. They have been filmed alive only a handful of times. They can self-amputate their tail. They live at 200-1,000 meters depth. Their red crest is formed by modified dorsal fin rays.
