Goblin Shark
About the Goblin Shark
A living fossil that has existed for 125 million years virtually unchanged. Their distinctive snout is covered in electroreceptors for detecting prey in total darkness. When prey is detected, their jaws shoot forward at 3.1 meters per second - the fastest jaw protrusion of any shark. Their skin is translucent pink due to visible blood vessels. They live at 200-1,200 meters depth. Fewer than 50 specimens have been studied. They can grow to 6 meters. Their teeth are long, narrow, and nail-like. They are sluggish swimmers. Almost nothing is known about their reproduction.
