About the Grouper (Goliath)

The largest reef-dwelling fish in the Atlantic, reaching 360 kg. They can produce a booming sound using their swim bladder that vibrates through the water. They are ambush predators that swallow prey whole. They are critically endangered due to overfishing. They are protected in US waters since 1990 and populations are slowly recovering. They can live 30+ years. They aggregate in large groups for spawning. They have been known to approach divers with curiosity. Their flesh can cause ciguatera poisoning.
