Guitarfish
About the Guitarfish
A ray that looks like a shark from the front and a ray from the back. Their body shape resembles a guitar, hence the name. They are among the most threatened elasmobranchs due to their coastal habitat overlap with fisheries. Over 40 species exist. They are bottom-dwellers that bury themselves in sand. They give birth to live young. Some species are critically endangered. They are caught as bycatch and targeted for their fins. Their fossil record extends back 150 million years. They are poor swimmers that rely on ambush.
