Komodo Dragon (Marine)
About the Komodo Dragon (Marine)
Not truly marine but excellent swimmers that cross open ocean between islands. They can swim several kilometers. They are the largest living lizard. Their venomous bite contains anticoagulant compounds that cause victims to bleed out. They can eat 80% of their body weight in a single meal. They detect carrion from 10 km away using their forked tongue. Females can reproduce without males (parthenogenesis). They live 30+ years. They are endangered with about 3,000 left in the wild. They dominate their island ecosystems as apex predators. They can sprint at 20 km/h in short bursts.
