Nurse Shark
About the Nurse Shark
Among the most docile sharks, often found resting on the seafloor during the day. They are nocturnal hunters that use suction to extract prey from crevices. They can generate enough suction to suck a conch out of its shell. They rest in groups of up to 40 individuals, sometimes stacked on top of each other. They are one of the few sharks that does not need to swim to breathe. They can pump water over their gills while stationary. They have barbels near their mouth that help locate prey. They can live 35+ years. They bite when provoked and their bite is extremely difficult to release.
