About the Seahorse (Pygmy)

Among the smallest fish in the sea at just 1-2 cm. They are so well camouflaged they were not discovered until 1969, and only after their host gorgonian coral was brought into a lab. Seven species are known. They live exclusively on specific species of gorgonian coral, matching its color and texture exactly. Their tail wraps around coral branches for stability. Males carry broods of just 6-10 eggs. They are found at 15-40 meters depth. Photographers prize them as subjects. Their habitat is threatened by coral reef destruction. New species continue to be discovered.
