About the Rockfish (Rougheye)

One of the longest-lived fish on Earth, reaching over 200 years. They do not begin reproducing until age 20-25. They have been aged by counting growth rings in their ear bones (otoliths). Over 100 species of rockfish exist along the Pacific coast. They give birth to live young. They are important commercial and sport fish. Many species are overfished. Some species have rebounded under strict management. They are ovoviviparous. They have venomous spines. The yelloweye rockfish can live over 100 years. Their slow growth and late maturity make them vulnerable to overfishing.
