About the Sailfish

Often considered the fastest fish in the ocean, reaching speeds of 110 km/h. Their massive dorsal fin (sail) can be raised or lowered. They use their sails to herd prey into tight schools, then slash through with their bills. Their body temperature is warmer than surrounding water. They can change color rapidly when excited or hunting. They are highly prized by sport fishermen. They can live 10-15 years. Their bill is longer relative to body size than marlin. Over 2 species exist. They are migratory, following warm currents. Their scales are embedded in the skin, making them very smooth.
