About the Sand Tiger Shark

They look ferocious with rows of protruding teeth but are surprisingly docile and rarely attack humans. Embryonic cannibalism occurs in the womb - the largest embryo eats its siblings. They gulp air at the surface to maintain neutral buoyancy, allowing them to hover motionless. They are the only shark known to do this. They are found in all oceans. They are nocturnal hunters. They can live 15+ years. They are popular in aquariums due to their fearsome appearance and calm demeanor. They are also called ragged-tooth sharks in South Africa and grey nurse sharks in Australia. They are vulnerable to overfishing.
