Stingray
About the Stingray
Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray barb through the heart - one of only 3 recorded stingray fatalities in Australia. Their venomous barb can reach 35 cm and serrated edges cause severe wounds. They are related to sharks and have cartilage skeletons. They detect prey using electroreceptors, sensing heartbeats through sand. They are ovoviviparous, giving birth to live young. They spend most of their time buried in sand. Some species can exceed 2 meters across. They have been around for 150 million years. They are nocturnal hunters. Over 200 species exist worldwide.
