About the Flounder (Summer)

Flatfish that begin life swimming upright then undergo a dramatic metamorphosis where one eye migrates to the other side of the head. They then spend the rest of their lives lying on their side on the seafloor. They can change color and pattern to match the substrate in seconds. They are ambush predators, lying partially buried in sand. They are important commercial and sport fish. They can live 10+ years. Over 600 species of flatfish exist. Both eyes end up on the same side of the head. They are among the most asymmetric vertebrates.
