About the Toadfish

Named for their toad-like appearance and their ability to produce sounds using their swim bladder. They can produce grunts, whistles, and humming sounds. Some species can survive out of water for 24 hours. The midshipman fish, a relative, hums for hours to attract mates, sometimes loud enough to be heard through boat hulls. They are ambush predators. They have venomous spines. They are found in shallow coastal waters. They are sometimes used in biomedical research on hearing and vocalization.
