Wobbegong
About the Wobbegong
Also called carpet sharks for their flat, patterned bodies that blend perfectly with the seafloor. They have ornate dermal flaps around their head that resemble seaweed. They are ambush predators, lying still until prey swims too close. They have been known to bite waders who step on them. Over 12 species exist. They can extend their jaws forward to create suction. They give birth to live young. They are found in shallow waters. Their skin is heavily patterned for camouflage. They are nocturnal. They can be aggressive when provoked. Their name comes from an Australian Aboriginal word.
