About the Squid (Bobtail)

Tiny squids that bury themselves in sand during the day. They have a symbiotic relationship with bioluminescent bacteria (Vibrio fischeri) housed in a special light organ. They use the bacteria to glow and eliminate their silhouette, matching moonlight from above. They are among the best-studied models for animal-bacterial symbiosis. Over 70 species exist. They are found worldwide in shallow waters. They are nocturnal hunters. They are sometimes called dumpling squid. They are among the cutest cephalopods.
