About the Giant Squid

One of the most elusive creatures on Earth - no live giant squid was photographed until 2004. They have the largest eyes in the animal kingdom at 25 cm across. They battle sperm whales in the deep ocean - scars from their suction cups are found on whales. They were thought to be mythical sea monsters for centuries. Their nervous system is among the most complex of any invertebrate. Over 20 species have been described. They can change color rapidly. They are eaten by sperm whales, sleeper sharks, and pilot whales. The first video of a live giant squid was captured in 2012.
