About the Humboldt Squid

Also called diablos rojos (red devils) by fishermen. They are aggressive predators that hunt in packs of up to 1,200. They can change color rapidly from white to deep red. They have been known to attack divers. Their tentacles are lined with 2,000 suction cups, each ringed with sharp teeth. They are expanding their range northward as oceans warm. They can swim at 24 km/h. They cannibalize injured members of their own group. They weigh up to 50 kg. They are the most important squid species by commercial catch. They live only 1-2 years but grow incredibly fast.
