bottlenose Dolphin
About the bottlenose Dolphin
They sleep with one eye open - literally. Half their brain sleeps at a time while the other half stays alert. They call each other by name using unique signature whistles. They have been observed teaching skills to their young, a trait once thought unique to humans. They use tools - some populations carry sponges on their beaks to protect them while foraging. Military dolphins have been trained to locate mines and enemy divers. They can live 50+ years. Their echolocation can detect a golf ball-sized object from 100 meters away. They are one of the few species that can recognize themselves in mirrors.
