Sperm Whale
About the Sperm Whale
The deepest-diving mammal, reaching 2,250 meters and holding their breath for 90 minutes. They have the largest brain of any creature that has ever lived on Earth, weighing 7.8 kg. They fight giant squid in the deep ocean - their bodies are often covered in suction cup scars from these battles. They were the inspiration for Moby Dick. A single sperm whale produces 300-400 kg of ambergris (worth $20 per gram), used in high-end perfumes. They live in matrilineal family groups. Their clicks at 230 decibels are the loudest sounds produced by any animal. There are about 300,000 left worldwide.
