Melon-headed Whale

About the Melon-headed Whale

Not a whale at all but a small dolphin. They are highly social, forming pods of 100-2,000 individuals. They are sometimes called electra dolphins. They are among the least studied cetaceans. They are often confused with pygmy killer whales. They are found in deep warm waters worldwide. They can dive to 200 meters. They strand occasionally in large groups. Their melon-shaped head is more pronounced than in other dolphins. They are sometimes caught in purse seine nets.
