About the Weddell Seal

They dive to 700 meters and hold their breath for over 80 minutes. They use their teeth to scrape breathing holes in sea ice, maintaining them throughout winter. Their underwater calls are among the most complex of any seal, with over 30 distinct call types. They are the most southerly breeding mammal in the world. They can live 30+ years. They have no natural predators in many areas and are surprisingly approachable. Over 800,000 exist. They are the best-studied Antarctic seal.
